After suffering the tragic loss of his mother, twelve-year-old Benjamin Simmons finds himself saddled with worries—and responsibilities. His father seems to erupt in anger more and more often at the slightest provocation when he isn't watching TV drunk or sleeping. Brianna, Ben's eight-year-old sister, is afraid of their father, desperately misses their mother, and looks to Ben for both protection and emotional support.

One afternoon, as Ben walks his usual route home along the edge of a vast wilderness called the Preserve, he discovers a strange rift in the air. He reaches out to touch it and watches in amazement as his arm is swallowed up. When he pulls his arm out, he finds it whole and unscathed.
